The Memories We Carry

Jenne had reached out to connect with her childhood cat many years after he had passed. Like so many people, she wasn't looking for proof as much as she was hoping to feel close to him again. To know that the love they had shared all those years ago still existed somewhere beyond memory.

As our session began, I asked Fluffy what he wanted Jenne to know.

He had a list.

Our favorite thing he said was simply,

"You were my favorite person."

He spoke about how much he loved her gentle spirit. How peaceful their life together had been. There was so much fondness in the way he remembered her that it felt less like listening to words and more like witnessing love remembering itself.

When I asked about their years together, he didn't show me events.

He showed me a feeling.

A series of snapshots wrapped in the sweetest sun-soaked light and warmth that made every memory glow like an old movie. I could feel how safe they had been together. How ordinary moments had quietly become sacred simply because they had shared them.

One of the things people often worry about after a beloved pet passes is whether they carried sadness when life changed.

Did they mind when we grew up?

When we moved away?

When they spent more time with another family member?

So I asked.

Fluffy's answer brought so much peace for Jenne.

There wasn't a trace of hurt.

He understood the seasons of life. He shared that his best years had been spent growing up alongside Jenne. By the time she left home, he had entered his own quiet, gentle years. His life felt fulfilled. Complete. He wasn't holding onto disappointment.

He was holding onto gratitude.

Before we finished, I asked if he could give Jenne a sign that they were still connected.

Without hesitation...

he showed me a single walnut in its shell.

That was it.

A walnut.

The moment I said,

"He showed me a walnut..."

She burst into tears.

She explained that the home where she'd grown up with Fluffy had long since been sold.

But one thing from that home had stayed with her forever.

The beautiful walnut tree in the front yard.

It had quietly stood watch over the years they spent growing up side by side.

In one simple image, and one unforgettable moment, Jenne's connection with Fluffy was restored.

Peace and recognition flooded her body.

I think that's one of the things I love most about working with animals who have crossed over.

They don't choose signs that will convince the world.

They choose signs that will heal one heart.

Fluffy didn't choose something impressive.

He chose something only Jenne would recognize.

Because it meant everything to them.

Before we ended, he left her with one final piece of guidance.

Expand your heart.

Live big.

Trust yourself.

Remember how deeply loved you are.

Don't let life's disappointments close you.

Keep showing up with an open heart.

As I reflected on the session afterward, I realized something beautiful.

We spend so much time wondering whether our animals remember us.

Whether they think about us.

Whether the years we shared mattered as much to them as they did to us.

Fluffy answered that question long before he ever showed us the walnut.

He answered it when he called Jenne his favorite person.

He answered it in those glowing childhood memories he carried so carefully.

He answered it with a tree that had quietly witnessed their life together.

Those glowy memories with our pets aren't just tattooed on our hearts.

They're on theirs too.

With love,

Annaliese
